Artist Statement

My work is a reflection of the industrial Midwest's rugged beauty and resilience. Inspired by the region's landscapes and urban structures, I infuse each piece with elements reminiscent of factory architecture, rusted metal, urban infrastructure, and the nature that sounds us. Through meticulous craftsmanship, I marry form and function, creating vessels that celebrate the region's industrial heritage while enhancing everyday rituals. My work is a tribute to the people and communities of the Midwest, embodying their spirit of resilience and determination. In a world dominated by mass production, I strive to preserve the art of handmade craftsmanship, inviting others to discover beauty in the familiar and the mundane through my pottery.

About Me

Alec Hoogland (they/them) graduated with a degree in ceramics in 2016, marking the inception of their lifelong passion for the craft. Their undergraduate studies provided a solid foundation, instilling in them a deep appreciation for the medium and nurturing their artistic sensibilities. Following graduation, Alec embarked on a transformative journey, spending 1.5 years immersed in the dynamic environment of a production studio. This experience proved invaluable, allowing Alec to refine their technical skills, develop an understanding of the production process, and gain firsthand insight into the business side of ceramics.

In 2018, Alec made the decision to transition from the structured confines of the production studio to pursue their artistic aspirations on a full-time basis. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a new chapter in their artistic journey, one characterized by boundless creativity, exploration, and self-discovery. Freed from the constraints of commercial production, Alec embraced the opportunity to delve deeper into their artistic practice, pushing the boundaries of their craft and forging their unique artistic identity.

In addition to their solo artistic pursuits, Alec also ventured into the realm of gallery ownership and opened Highland Studio & Gallery, driven by a desire to create a platform for fellow artists to showcase their work. This venture not only provided a space for artistic expression but also allowed Alec to engage with the wider artistic community, fostering connections and collaborations that enriched their own creative journey.
